Adderall and Caffeine: A Guide to Your Concerns

When your morning Cup of Joe isn’t quite doing the job, it can be tempting to layer on an extra stimulant, such as Adderall, to help give you that jolt of energy and much-needed focus and concentration. However, taking Adderall and caffeine together may actually increase the negative side effects of Adderall while reducing its effectiveness.

In this article, we’ll discuss the effects of Adderall and caffeine, what happens when you mix the two, and how to boost energy and concentration without caffeine or Adderall.

Adderall 101

Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine, better known as Adderall, is a prescription medication that is frequently prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It’s also commonly used to improve focus and productivity and boost energy levels in those without ADHD.

Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, two central nervous stimulants that can improve focus and reduce impulsivity by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Like most prescription drugs, Adderall doesn’t come without side effects. Potential side effects of Adderall to be aware of include, but are not limited to:

  • Restlessness

  • Stomach pain

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Fever

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Elevated blood pressure and heart rate

  • Changes in mood (e.g., agitation, aggression, irritability, fear, anxiety, mood swings, depression, etc.)

  • Physical dependence and withdrawal

Caffeine is a stimulant that naturally occurs in many plants, including coffee beans, tea leaves, and cacao pods. Caffeine can also be synthetic which is the type of caffeine you’re likely to find in energy drinks and caffeinated soft drinks.

Caffeine is also a stimulant of the central nervous system but in a different manner. Caffeine increases energy and alertness by blocking receptors of the neurotransmitter adenosine, a brain chemical that makes you feel tired, while simultaneously increasing levels of other neurotransmitters that regulate energy, such as adrenaline (the fight or flight hormone).

The most common side effects of caffeine include:

  • Restlessness and jitters

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Gastrointestinal issues

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Elevated heart rate

  • Dehydration

  • Dependency

Although Adderall and caffeine are both stimulants of the central nervous system, they’re very different compounds that produce different effects. Combining the two can overstimulate the nervous system, causing the side effects to be intensified.

Taking the two simultaneously can overwork the nervous system and cardiovascular system, which often causes chest pain and anxiety. Additionally, side effects such as insomnia, headache, and increased heart rate may be intensified. The combination of Adderall and caffeine is particularly harmful to those with pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or an anxiety disorder.

On top of this, caffeine may have a negative impact on the effectiveness of Adderall. Many believe this is because the diuretic properties of caffeine may prompt the body to remove the drug from the system quicker, ultimately shortening the lifespan of Adderall.

There may also be an increased risk of developing an addiction when regularly mixing Adderall and caffeine as both are considered addictive substances.

How To Boost Energy and Focus Without Adderall or Caffeine

While consuming a small amount of caffeine while taking Adderall is unlikely to be harmful, it’s never a good idea to mix multiple stimulants. Luckily, there are plenty of natural ways to boost energy levels and improve focus without the negative side effects.

If you’re looking to boost energy without caffeine or Adderall, here’s what we recommend:

  1. Try a caffeine alternative or Adderall alternative, such as tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), ginseng, peppermint, B vitamins, or nootropics.

  2. Try some energy-boosting activities such as exercise, spending time in nature, and meditation.

  3. Eat small, frequent meals and incorporate a balanced, energy-boosting diet.

  4. Drink more water and reduce alcohol intake.

  5. Stress can take a serious toll on energy levels. Find ways to manage your stress and mood.
