CBD Basics

CBD is one of more than 100 naturally occurring compounds, or cannabinoids, found in hemp plants. The endocannabinoid system is comprised of two receptor types: the endocannabinoid type I and type II (CB1 and CB2) receptors which are located throughout your body, including the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord, your gastrointestinal tract, your skeletal muscles, your vascular system, and your skin.

What Is CBD Oil Good For?

Because of the interaction between CBD and the endocannabinoid system, CBD oil has the potential to reduce everyday aches and pains, alleviate mild anxiety, and promote restful sleep.

Relieving Everyday Aches and Pains

Whether you have achy feet from a long day at work or have sore muscles from a workout, CBD oil might be just what you need. Inflammation is often the source of our aches and pains. It can give rise to a sensation of pain through the activation of nerves that carry pain signals to the brain. That’s where CBD comes in. 

While CBD does not directly alleviate pain, it has the potential to promote a normal inflammatory response in the body. However, pain is a bit more complicated than the activation of nerve cells—it can also be affected by other things like mood.

Researchers currently believe there are several things responsible for CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects on the body. 

  • The endocannabinoid system can regulate feelings of pain and the inflammatory response. So because CBD can act as a weak activator of endocannabinoid type II receptors (CB2), it also affects the inflammatory response.

  • CBD can increase anandamide levels, enhancing CB2 action and therefore reducing the inflammatory response.

Easing Mild Anxiety and Stress

Stress and mild anxiety can take a toll on us. It can interfere with our ability to focus, make us feel restless, and make us irritable. The precise mechanism for CBD’s potential to reduce anxiousness is still up for debate, but several have been proposed. 

  • One potential mechanism is believed to be through CBD’s ability to activate the brain receptor for serotonin, 5-HT1A, which is linked to anxiety and depression.

  • Another potential mechanism is that CBD increases the level of a particular endocannabinoid called anandamide, also known as the “bliss chemical.” Anandamide signaling is associated with a positive mood and a sense of calm.

Sleep is such an important part of overall health and wellness, yet we often place sleep on the back burner. According to the CDC, about one in three adults don’t get enough sleep. 

Preliminary research suggests that CBD in larger doses may ease sleeping troubles. Although more research is needed, researchers believe that the potential sleep benefits associated with CBD may be linked to cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a steroid hormone responsible for regulating a breadth of important processes throughout the body, including sleep-wake cycles.  Researchers discovered that cortisol levels decreased significantly when subjects took large doses of CBD, suggesting that CBD may act as a sedative via its effect on the release of cortisol.
